Pregnancy: Program discusses the various changes in the woman's body that occur during pregnancy, particularly those that may cause distressing symptoms. Nursing interventions that can help alleviate these symptoms are illustrated. Helps nurses distinguish normal changes from those that are abnormal. The last portion of the program discusses normal prenatal care and the assessments that are essential. Labor and Delivery: Program begins by discussing the premonitory signs of labor and some of the theories regarding the causes of the onset of labor. Discusses in depth the four stages of labor and the nursing interventions that facilitate the birth process in addition to monitoring the well being of both the mother and the fetus, and helping as much as possible to alleviate the woman's physical discomfort. Pain Control During Labor and Delivery: Program explores both physiologic and psychosocial causes of pain during labor and delivery. Describes discomfort associated with each stage of labor. Discusses non-pharmacologic methods of pain management including traditional and non-traditional methods. Explains the different types of pharmacologic pain control including various systemic and regional medications. Leopold's Maneuvers: Program identifies and demonstrates the four maneuvers for palpating the maternal abdomen to determine fetal presentation, fetal lie, fetal engagement, and fetal attitude in order to predict the type of delivery that will occur. Identifies also the appropriate location for listening to the fetal heart, and demonstrates the use of the Doppler stethoscope
